Project Details

The historic Midland Building, now operating as the Surety Hotel in downtown Des Moines, Iowa, required extensive renovation to modernize the facility while preserving its architectural character. JC Toland Painting provided a broad range of construction, restoration, and finishing services throughout the project, contributing to the successful transformation of this 100-plus-year-old landmark.

Our scope included interior demolition, metal stud framing, drywall installation, and historic plaster repair. By restoring existing plaster surfaces while integrating new construction elements, our team helped maintain the building's historic integrity while meeting modern performance standards.

Following construction and surface preparation, JC Toland completed comprehensive interior and exterior painting services throughout the property. The project included lead paint removal from historic windows, repainting of original architectural features, and installation of vinyl wall coverings in designated areas. High-performance coating systems were utilized to provide durability, safety, and a premium finish appropriate for a luxury hospitality environment.

A key component of the renovation was the restoration of the building's historic twelve-story atrium staircase. Using specialized blasting equipment and lead-safe removal procedures, our industrial coatings team removed multiple layers of lead paint to expose the original marble treads and architectural details. The staircase was then carefully refinished to preserve its historic appearance while ensuring long-term durability.

The Surety Hotel project highlights JC Toland Painting's expertise in historic restoration, commercial painting, lead paint abatement, drywall systems, and specialty finishing, demonstrating our ability to deliver complex renovation projects while preserving significant architectural assets.
