Project Details

The Ames History Museum, located on Historic Main Street in Ames, Iowa, is a cultural landmark and community centerpiece. When the building required a full renovation, JC Toland Painting was proud to help restore and modernize the space while preserving its historic character. This project highlights our ability to combine commercial construction services with detailed restoration work.

Although smaller than large commercial builds, the scope included multiple trades and complex coordination. JC Toland Painting provided metal stud framing, drywall installation, drywall and plaster finishing, and decorative tin and acoustical ceiling installation. In addition, our team restored and prepared historic surfaces to ensure a consistent transition between old and new materials.

We also completed exterior restoration work, including stucco repair, exterior painting, wood staining, and historic sign refinishing. As a result, the building now reflects both its original architectural identity and updated protective finishes designed for long-term durability.

Two restoration features stand out on this project. First, we restored the original vault door by removing rust, applying a protective coating system, and finishing it with a durable topcoat. The door regained both function and historic character. Second, we carefully refinished the iconic Ames Pantorium neon sign. Our team preserved the original lettering while applying protective coatings to extend its lifespan.

Overall, this project demonstrates JC Toland Painting’s expertise in historic restoration and commercial painting in Ames, Iowa. Specifically, we manage framing, drywall, plaster, painting, and specialty restoration under one coordinated scope. As a result, property owners benefit from consistency, efficiency, and high-quality craftsmanship.

The Ames History Museum now stands as a restored community landmark that reflects both history and modern craftsmanship. We’re proud to share the following photos, which are a holistic capture of (most, but not all) our capabilities.
